Description:
Our Rideau Canal kayak tour concentrates on a beautiful 10-km stretch of the Rideau Canal, last year celebrating its 175th birthday, commencing at historic Jones Falls, and ending at Chaffey's Locks - Just south of Newboro "The Great Divide". It is here where the waters begin to flow north to Ottawa. Our adventure begins at the historic 60' high dam at Jones Falls, but not before first exploring this beautiful location, steeped in history. We will learn of the difficulties engineers experienced while building the waterway as we pass through several small lakes on our paddle toward Chaffey's Locks. We will have a chance to sample some of the excitement as pleasure boaters and kayakers alike pass through the old historic locks as well as the modern hydraulic system. Our leisurely paddle generally keeps us far away from the mainstream boat traffic as we're in protected waters. Along the way we will portage over the scenic Davis Lock, where we will have lunch. We'll shortly arrive at Chaffey's Locks, where paddlers with lots of energy left can accompany one of our experienced guides and paddle a bit farther into Indian Lake and Clear Lake. Then turn around at Newboro Lake, and head back to Chaffey's Locks. Before returning home, Paddlers can drive up to Newboro and have a chance to tour some of the interesting shops and the famous Kilborn's store.
A fantastic day paddle combining the kayaking expertise of Frontenac Outfitters with lots of stories about the route's human and natural history as told by eastern Ontario's raconteur, naturalist and historian Terry Sprague.
